The biggest question going into the 2014 NBA Draft is, which player has the most promise to be an elite star. There are three players that will most likely go first in the draft, they are: Joel Embiid, Andrew Wiggins, and Jabari Parker. These are the three players that have a lot of potential to be elite stars in the NBA. Another question that has been asked is, will the Cleveland Cavaliers trade the first overall pick.
Many mock drafts have shown that Joel Embiid will be the first overall pick by the Cavaliers because he is a dominant 7-footer, that would be a perfect fit for the Cavs; he’d also be a force in the paint. The Cavaliers already have a player on the rise in Kyrie Irving. Many people say that the Cavs should draft Embiid, put him at center, keep Kyrie Irving at point guard, and sign LeBron James at small forward. Sadly, the Cavs can not assume LeBron will sign with Cleveland. Another big issue Embiid has faced after only one year of college basketball is injuries. He missed the entire 2014 NCAA Men’s tournament with a back injury. And now, going into the draft, having had surgery on his foot, questions will remain whether he will be healthy or constantly get hurt.
A second option the Cavaliers have, is Duke star Jabari Parker. Parker can be compared to a Carmelo Anthony. Parker has been known more for his ability to score the basketball, while not being a dominant defender. Just like Carmelo Anthony, purely a point scorer. Parker is not a number one overall pick. If he plays absolutely no defense, he will serve no purpose on the Cavs. The Cavs have young scorers in Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters, they need a great defensive player. Parker is still a very talented player, but is mainly going to go to a team to score the basketball. Which is a good thing, but not what the Cavaliers really need.
Lastly, there is always the option of the talented Andrew Wiggins. I see Wiggins going number one overall in the draft for a few reasons. He is a play-maker, he’s quick, he has an insane vertical leap, and is also very athletic. He had quite a few games where he struggled, but he also had some games that opened the eyes of many NBA scouts. I think that if Wiggins works to get a lot stronger, and mature more in the NBA, he could be like a LeBron James. He has a decent shot, but he is explosive and quick when driving to the hoop. Going into the draft on Thursday night, the Cavs have to assume they are not getting LeBron, and draft a player with a lot of potential in Andrew Wiggins. This guy has some NBA ready talent. If he lives up to his potential, he could be an NBA superstar, and form a great duo with Kyrie Irving, and bring an NBA title(s) to Cleveland.
Here is where I see the 3 talent filled players going in the draft:
1. Cleveland Cavaliers- Andrew Wiggins
2. Milwaukee Bucks- Joel Embiid
3. Philadelphia 76ers- Jabari Parker
