The Jets open up Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, a team who has made it to the playoffs 5 years in a row. The toughest task for the Jets is going to be shutting down star wide receiver AJ Green. A consistent 1,000 yard receiver, there is no doubt Green can do it again. The 6 foot 4 receiver will be tough for the Jets to shut down. According to ESPN, Darrelle Revis will not be guarding Green 1 on 1, he will have help. If the Jets find a way to shut down Green, they will have a good chance to win this game.
The Jets defensive line is arguably their strongest link on their team. They need to use that to their advantage against 2 solid running backs in Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard. With Mohammed Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, and Leonard Williams, this line should be a force, like it has been in the past. On third and short situations, they have to come through in the clutch if the Jets want to win this game.
Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to play like the Ryan Fitzpatrick of 2015. Fitzpatrick had a year not many suspected in 2015, setting the Jets single season passing touchdown record, there was concern whether he would be resigned in 2016. He ended up signing for a team that appears to be all in, because lets be honest, this team is not getting any younger. Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to find Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker early and often in this game. He was able to find these receivers constantly in 2015, so there’s no reason the same can’t happen in 2016. Fitzpatrick is the leader of the offense, and he will dictate whether the offense has a good or bad game. If he throws 3 touchdown passes, and does not turn the ball over tomorrow, I think the Jets will win this game.
Lastly, the running game has to take some of the pressure off of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Newly acquired Matt Forte needs to continue his consistency, especially with a new team. Forte is starting to get older, but he fits perfectly into the Jets system. Last season we saw Chan Gailey call a lot of plays to pass to running back Bilal Powell. Forte is a big time receiving back, so he needs to be effective in that aspect like he has been throughout his career. He has big shoes to fill as a running back filling in for Chris Ivory, who signed with The Jacksonville Jaguars. Ivory was always great at gaining positive yardage to keep a drive going. If we see that from Forte, that will help this team be successful.
Keys to a victory
- Shut down AJ Green
- Defensive line continues it’s dominance
- Fitzpatrick continue’s his success as a Jet
- Limit turnovers
- Run game takes some of the load off of Ryan Fitzpatrick
If these 5 things happen in the Jets’ home opener, I am almost positive the team will be victorious, and get an important opening day win in what is a tough first 6 games.
