New York sports fans may have something to look forward to

The NFL season was rough for both the New York Jets and Giants. Neither team made the playoffs. The NBA season has not been much better, as the Knicks are in last place in the eastern conference, and the Nets are battling just for the 8th seed in the conference. In the 2014 MLB season, neither the Mets nor Yankees made the playoffs.

The sport that is least talked about, hockey has something that would would get a lot of viewers. The Islanders and Rangers, who both sit in first place in the Metropolitan division with 84 points a piece, can potentially meet in the playoffs. The way it looks at the moment, they would not meet until the eastern conference finals, but there is a good chance of this.

All New York hockey fans would not want anything more then for these 2 teams to meet in the playoffs. The islanders have shocked the hockey universe by being in first place this late in the season, are currently 3-1 vs the Rangers. With the Islanders high powered offense, it will be tough for them to make a deep run in the playoffs with their lack of experience, but hey, why not. It is their last season at Nassau Coliseum, and they’d love to bring the cup back to Long Island, led by John Tavares, who is tied for the league lead in points.

The Rangers on the other hand are full of experience, led by Rick Nash and Henrik Lundqvist, in which the team has been to the playoffs in 9 of the last 10 seasons. The Rangers are going all in this year, as they are up there in age. If they meet the Islanders in the playoffs, this series will bring the rivalry back. The Islanders have been a quiet franchise for the last 15 or 20 years, and they are destined to make a run at some point.

So what would be better then the Islander meeting up with the Rangers in the Stanley Cup playoffs? Each team has their advantages, and it would be exciting to watch. Every New Yorker would pick a side. It is something bright for New York sports fans to look forward to considering all other sports have not treated them well.

Why the Islanders will be better than the Rangers in the 2014-2015 season

The 2014 season was a disappointing season for the New York Islanders. They finished last in the Metropolitan division with a record of 34-37-11. As for the Rangers, they played but lost in the greatest stage in hockey; the Stanley Cup. In the Stanley Cup, Henrik Lunqvist had to keep them in the last couple of games, but the Rangers offense could not score enough goals to beat the Kings. So, why will the Islanders have a better record then the Rangers in the 2014-15 season?

The Rangers have already had an exceptional season, but they are way too reliant on their all-star goalie, Henrik Lunqvist. They have Marty St. Louis to score goals, Rick Nash and Mats Zuccarello can score as well. However, offense is more so their issue. The Islanders, on the other hand, have a top five player overall in John Tavares. Kyle Okposo is also an excellent goal scorer. Michael Grabner, even though he may not score a ton of goals, is a quick and explosive player, and a young player with a lot of promise in Ryan Strome.  Lastly, I believe Andres Lee is going to have a big season. He has 10 goals in 24 career games, so the talent is there.

Teams in the NHL need goal scorers in order to win, and I do not think the Islanders will have a problem putting the puck in the net. The Islanders problem for the past decade at least has been their goal tending. They’ve tried guys like Rick DiPietro, Evgeni Nabokov, and Kevin Poulin. None have had real consistent success, so this offseason they signed Jaroslav Halak, who has a solid save percentage and record, but has been bothered by injuries or backing up top notch goalies like C.J. Price or Ryan Miller, so he has never had a real chance. Islander fans should be excited with this acquisition, because this is what the team needs. Halak (29) has great potential.

This should be an interesting season for the Islanders. I really think they could have a top 5 or 10 offense in league. It appears that they may have the perfect goaltender for the team. The Rangers on the other hand are a little older, and they are currently in the Stanley Cup. If they are going to win it all, it will have to be this year. The Islanders are on the rise, and should be good heading into Brooklyn for the 2015-2016 season.
